Throughout history, the relationship between truth and lies has been a central issue in the exercise of political power. It remains present in modern democracies today. Propaganda and fake news can play a strategic role in politics, but truth can strengthen citizens' trust in political practice. Plato and Machiavelli allow us to reflect on a question that remains relevant: to what extent may a ruler depart from the truth in order to achieve political objectives?
