Pianist Vijay Iyer is another of the key names in 21st-century jazz. We have seen him three times at the festival, all three in a trio, but now —to celebrate our 60th anniversary— we wanted to invite him in one of the formats we love most: solo piano. For us, solo piano is always an adventure, with the artist facing the instrument supported only by their imagination and without any external safety net. From his only solo-piano album (Solo), we know Iyer can draw on major figures in the jazz imagination such as Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, but also on pop (Michael Jackson) and, naturally, his own compositions.
