Gran Teatre del Liceu is pleased to open its Saló dels Miralls to the creative universe of Javier Mariscal (Valencia, 1950), an artist who has transformed spontaneous gesture and apparently naïve line into a language of extraordinary cultural power. His work, deeply rooted in the emotional memory of a vibrant and changing Barcelona, activates a luminous nostalgia that does not look back with melancholy but with an undiminished desire to believe again in art's ability to generate excitement. Drawing is the backbone of his work: free, playful and charged with vital energy, defending the pleasure of creation as a primary act. In Mariscal's work, gesture is neither corrected nor hardened; it remains open, vulnerable and faithful to the initial impulse. This formal honesty builds a recognisable and expansive visual universe in which characters, colours and forms enter into dialogue with popular culture, design, music and everyday life. Art, in this context, becomes a space of freedom where imagination regains centre stage.
