"Yard Act" Concert

At the turn of the millennium, many eyes turned to the United Kingdom, hoping conditions were right for a band to emerge that would combine post-punk's angular character with britpop's expansive spirit. But none of that generation seemed inclined to do it. We had to wait another generation, but the arrival finally came from Leeds: Yard Act, something of an alloy of Talking Heads, The Fall, Pulp and LCD Soundsystem, are the band we had been dreaming of for so long. A rhythmic machine unafraid to lubricate itself with an acidic sense of humour, led by James Smith, an old-school frontman. In other words, one of those band leaders devoted purely to singing without another instrument, though he does it under every possible condition: singing while jumping, twisting, running and moving.
