"Zeyne" Concert

Zein Sajdi was born in Amman into a Palestinian-Jordanian family that revolved around music. Her father collected records. Her mother was an amateur singer and led a dabke group, a traditional dance popular across the Arab Mediterranean. Her sister was a pianist. She graduated intending to work in the media, but her story had already been written along other lines: during the pandemic she began posting videos on Instagram covering other people's songs, and before long she had officially become zeyne. Her story filters through her music, which sounds the way it does because of her family background but also because of her geopolitical context. Her contemporary R&B sits close to English-language artists such as Sudan Archives or Empress Of, but her songs are shaped as much by that sonic tradition as by the suffering of the Palestinian people. "You can't separate what is happening in Palestine from how I move through the world, how I think or what I believe, and the weight of that is constant, like the pain, the anger and the helplessness," she has said in interview.
