'Barcelona 1700. From Stones to People' Exhibition

Archaeological interventions carried out within the former Born market have made it possible to understand in detail a fragment of Barcelona's urban fabric and to find traces of the life once lived there. Among the large amount of surviving documentation, the wills of local residents and inventories from many of the homes uncovered have allowed us to discover first-hand what life was like in Barcelona at the time. Barcelona, capital of Catalonia, had just over 38,000 inhabitants. Its population was highly diverse, with many citizens coming from different places and cultures. It was a society connected to the world through intense commercial activity, well fed and fond of sweets, strongly shaped by religion and superstition, with a taste for bright colours and decorative clothing, and devoted to festivities, dance, music, theatre and games. Between 1691 and 1714, this Barcelona suffered the horrors of war. After defeat, nothing was ever the same again. The exhibition displays around 1,800 objects found during archaeological work at the site, which have provided valuable new knowledge for building a portrait of everyday life in Barcelona three centuries ago.
