Housing has been a constant challenge in the contemporary city. The lack of housing for working-class communities has been a shared problem in many major cities around the world. The exhibition examines construction policies and patterns of access to housing for Barcelona's urban majority throughout the 20th century: from unaffordable rents at the beginning, through an extremely harsh post-war period, to the almost compulsory purchase of flats under late Francoism and, finally, advances under democracy, although interventions proved more effective in public space than in housing itself.
