Centre Cívic Josep Maria Trias i Peitx, la Maternitat i Sant Ramon, Les Corts
Led by Cristina Álvarez. The death of the female protagonist is one of opera's great recurring themes. But why do so many heroines end up dying? Is it merely a dramatic convention, or does it also tell us something about the society that created these stories? Through characters such as Mimì, Tosca, Butterfly and Turandot, this talk reflects on the role of women in opera and on how Puccini created some of the repertoire's most complex and moving female characters. A journey through love, freedom, power and tragedy to understand what distinguishes Puccini's heroines from those of the earlier operatic tradition.
