The Centre d'Interpretació del Castell de Montjuïc houses a permanent exhibition tracing the history of this architectural monument, one of the most significant in Barcelona and Catalonia as a whole. Featuring objects, original works and documentary materials from various archives, the exhibition occupies four rooms in the Castell, refurbished and adapted for the museum project and accessible from the parade ground. The exhibition is divided into four spaces: Muntanya de Barcelona; Farell, fortí i fortalesa; Defensa i repressió; and Presó i memòria. The first section, Muntanya de Barcelona, explains how Montjuïc hill has been inhabited, exploited and transformed for around 10,000 years. Sandstone used to build Barcelona since Roman times was quarried there. Today, Montjuïc is the city's major cultural park. In the second section, Farell, fortí i fortalesa, the exhibition focuses on the small fort that the city government ordered to be built at the start of the Reapers' War (1640-1652) around the farell, also known as a watchtower, which had occupied the summit of Montjuïc since the medieval period.
