"What Is This Big Bang Thing? Can You Explain It to Us?" Talk

Led by Emili Elizalde, ICE-CSIC and IEEC, UPC Campus, Bellaterra. What is this thing we call the Big Bang? Many people think they understand it, but in fact it is quite a difficult concept. To begin with, there is a bit of confusion: on the one hand we have the Big Bang singularity; on the other, cold and hot Big Bang models; and then there is the Big Bang theory shown on television... Which version should we accept? At first sight, the singularity may seem the most rigorous and well-established concept. We have heard a lot about it. But when we look more deeply, it turns out that in physics, in nature, singularities do not exist: not a single one! Are we being taken for a ride? In truth, yes. Here we will go step by step, clearing up misunderstandings one by one until we reach the essence, the real “Big Bang”. It is none other than what Fred Hoyle had in mind when, on 28 March 1949, he first uttered those two words. This talk will take place in the Sala d'Actes at Centre Cívic Guinardó and is intended exclusively for adults or people aged over sixteen if accompanied.
