Jardí Botànic de Barcelona, el Poble-sec, Sants-Montjuïc
The bonsai collection at Jardí Botànic originated in the legacy left to the garden by the family of Pere Duran i Farell. This engineer, businessman and committed supporter of the Jardí was also a recognised master in the world of bonsai. From the time he began practising the art in the early 1980s until his death in 1999, he developed and assembled a remarkable collection of 108 bonsai trees of Mediterranean species, 80 of which are in the Jardí collection. Jardí Botànic de Barcelona has preserved and expanded the collection through acquisitions, further donations and recoveries, and it now comprises 342 specimens. A dedicated area in the garden's nursery displays 36 bonsai trees, which change according to the seasons and the needs of each specimen. Some trees are displayed with accent plants —companion plants— that complement and enhance the tree's beauty and imitate the way bonsai are traditionally displayed in Japan.
