What is the Museu's Terrat Viu like? Total roof area: 14,000 m²; Terrat Viu: 7,100 m². The characteristics and location of buildings determine the types of plants that can be used on green roofs. The Terrat has a weight limit, the sea is nearby and the site is often windy. To stay within the permitted weight, herbaceous plants that need only a shallow layer of soil have been chosen, avoiding trees and heavier vegetation. Terrat Viu features flora adapted to Mediterranean environmental conditions, specifically those of Barcelona and its proximity to the sea. The Museu roof is a natural laboratory where research can be carried out in different scientific fields. Its characteristics allow projects on fauna, water quality and climate change to be conducted in a controlled environment. These projects are developed by the Museu's scientific teams in collaboration with other research centres and universities. What can be found at Terrat Viu? The experimental areas allow research in different fields of natural science. One useful indicator is the soil microbiome. To study it in a controlled way, we use mesocosms: small greenhouse structures shaped like hexagonal domes and open at the top.…
