The technological advances of prehistory were as revolutionary as those of today, although they occurred much further apart in time. Humanity changed through the mastery of fire, stone-working and the manufacture of the first tools. These developments helped consolidate communities and stimulate material progress. Agriculture, livestock farming and pottery production were also true catalysts, leading to sedentary life, the accumulation of surpluses and the beginnings of trade. Some groups could finally specialise in tasks beyond the direct search for food, such as metallurgy or jewellery-making, producing genuine luxury objects of the time. New needs generated new ideas and increasingly elaborate artistic and symbolic forms. Societies themselves evolved towards more complex models, with the appearance of the first hierarchies and early urban designs. Little by little, prehistoric cultures definitively shaped Europe's collective identity. We are direct heirs of that world.
