At the end of the 3rd century, Emperor Diocletian introduced a new territorial organisation of the Roman Empire: from that point it was divided into Eastern and Western jurisdictions, each subdivided into dioceses and provinces. Following this territorial division, the Church gradually took shape and spread throughout the Empire; also here in Tarraconensis, where the provincial capital was Tarragona (Tàrraco) and a number of dioceses —episcopal sees— were subsequently created, such as Bàrcino in the 4th century and Ègara in the 5th. This territorial organisation —with some minor changes— remained in place until 15 June 2004, when Pope John Paul II established two new dioceses: Sant Feliu de Llobregat and Terrassa, making Barcelona a metropolitan see and the two new dioceses its suffragans. Over the centuries, the parish has been and continues to be a fundamental institution in the history of the Church and of culture itself, because it has helped shape territory, towns and people as we know them today.
