GOING FORTH BY DAY. The Book of the Dead of the Ancient Egyptians presents one of the most resonant documents handed down to us by ancient Egypt. It is a religious text of fundamental importance, a kind of guide and source of help for all those who aspired to a full life after earthly death. The ancient Egyptians believed in the possibility of enjoying a new life after death. To achieve this, among other creations, they devised true “manuals” containing the necessary texts and images. Following the tradition of the Pyramid Texts in the Old Kingdom and the Coffin Texts during the Middle Kingdom, from the New Kingdom until the end of Pharaonic civilisation the Book of the Dead, or Book of Going Forth by Day, was the most widely used compendium of religious ideas for dealing with matters relating to life in the Afterlife. There are a great many examples of the Book of the Dead, usually written on papyrus, combining texts and images and consisting of a variable number of the nearly 200 known spells.
