Baixada del Monestir, Pedralbes, Les Corts

The exhibition offers an introduction to a complex and sophisticated science developed throughout the Middle Ages from the basic principles of Greek and Roman medicine and the contributions of Arab-Islamic culture, taking nature as the starting point for its practice. This knowledge was transmitted through books and treatises that were continuously copied, translated into different languages and commented on over the centuries. In medieval Barcelona, doctors and apothecaries were highly familiar not only with the healing properties of different animal and plant products, but also with the medicinal compounds appropriate for each illness, which could be purchased from the city's apothecaries. The exhibition "Plantes, remeis i apotecaris" is presented in three different spaces of the Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes: the former pharmacy, the cloister and the former infirmary.
