'Storage Furniture from the Monestir. The Greatness of Simplicity' Exhibition

In the rooms of the former infirmary of the Pedralbes monastery, a small display of furniture preserved by the religious community has been on view since 12 January 2021, notable more for its historical than its artistic value. It is a collection of basically constructed, simple and austere furniture in which utility and functionality take precedence over any aesthetic consideration. Its origins, however, are diverse: besides commissions and dowries, pieces came from donations of property by Queen Elisenda, founder of the monastery, and by the noblewomen who accompanied her in cloistered life. For this reason, the display of furniture from the 14th to the 19th centuries, while prioritising storage furniture suited to the monastery's needs —worship, singing, archives, infirmary, clothing and reading— also bears witness, albeit modestly, to furniture more characteristic of the female courtly sphere. Such pieces entered the monastery as part of the trousseau and dowry of many women from noble and well-to-do families.
