Valérie Belin (1964) is a French artist who, after studying art and philosophy, made photography the centre of her practice. Her work reflects on the relationship between reality, representation and artifice through frontal, serial images of great formal precision influenced by minimalism. From the 1990s onwards, she introduced the human figure to question identity and simulation in series such as Bodybuilders, Transsexuels, Femmes noires and Mannequins. From 2006 she incorporated colour and developed a language she defines as “magical realism”, in which the figure becomes a hybrid of flesh, icon and illusion. Her work has been exhibited internationally at leading institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, Musée de l'Élysée in Lausanne and Kunsthaus Zürich. She has also presented solo exhibitions at museums including MUba Eugène Leroy (Tourcoing) and Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux.
