'Behind the Monastery Walls. 700 Years of a Women’s History' Virtual Exhibition

This documentary is the result of a broad and ambitious research project that allows us to approach monestir de Pedralbes from its origins to the present in a way never previously possible. The study of documents preserved in the monastery archive, alongside analysis of the traces left on the building by successive interventions, allows us to understand how it grew and changed over the centuries until reaching the form we see today. For centuries, this royal foundation was a genuine centre of female power closely connected to the country and, particularly, to the city of Barcelona. Using 3D technology, viewers can virtually enter some of the rooms of the medieval monastery, recreated as faithfully as possible from documentary evidence, surviving physical remains and contemporary parallels. It should also be noted that although the image of the monastery presented is set in the early 15th century, the capella de Sant Miquel has been included asynchronously at the moment when its murals were created, which belongs to an earlier period, because of their exceptional importance within the monastery complex.
