The French Revolution changed history and created a myth that is still alive. It shared a common language with the American revolution — rights, sovereignty, constitution — yet gave rise to a very different process: more disruptive and unstable. It combined the spirit of emancipation with the drift into terror, the universalist impulse with nation-building. It was the mirror in which later revolutions would look at themselves, and also a key moment in the development of liberalism. By Ángel Rivero, senior lecturer in Political Science and Public Administration at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He has recently published a political biography of Benjamin Constant and has edited authors such as Constant, Isaiah Berlin and Ágnes Heller.
