'From Party Walls to Façades. A Legacy for the City. Sant Andreu' Exhibition

Party walls are anonymous walls dividing properties. Although they play no role in a building's external appearance, changes in urban planning can leave them permanently exposed to public view in what was meant to be a temporary condition. When this happens, it creates a discontinuity in the landscape and a break in the urban fabric that can cause serious structural and habitability problems for affected and neighbouring buildings, as well as a significant visual impact on public space. Twenty-five years ago, the Pla de remodelació de mitgeres de Barcelona was launched to remove these urban discontinuities and create new façades integrated into the urban landscape. As part of Barcelona's designation as World Capital of Architecture 2026 by UNESCO-UIA, Fundació Mies van der Rohe and Ajuntament de Barcelona are launching this international ideas competition to redesign ten party walls, one in each city district, with the aim of leaving a lasting legacy in Barcelona and inviting the global community of young architects to participate.
