What to do in La Barceloneta

La Barceloneta was built in 1753 on a grid of very long, narrow blocks, designed so that air would reach every home. That layout is still there and you feel it walking: short streets that end at the sea. The beach dates from 1992; the neighbourhood is far older. If you have a few hours, it works for walking, eating and staying put.

From the 1753 rehousing to the 1992 beach, in three steps.

It was built in 1753 to rehouse the Ribera residents evicted decades earlier, and for two centuries it was a quarter of fishermen and dockers.

Its street grid is unique in Barcelona: very long, narrow blocks designed so that every home had daylight and cross-ventilation.

Today's beach dates from 1992: before the Olympics the seafront was beach bars, railway tracks and industrial sheds.
