What to do in Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter has two thousand years stacked on top of each other: the Roman wall shows through on plaça Nova, the civil Gothic ensemble stands complete on plaça del Rei, and a good part of what looks medieval was rebuilt in the early twentieth century. You can cover it in a while and you do not need a plan: the squares turn up unannounced. If you have a few hours, this is where getting lost works.

Get to know Gothic Quarter

From Barcino to the twentieth-century rebuild, in three steps.

Roman Barcino lies underneath: stretches of 4th-century wall are still visible on Plaça Nova and Plaça Ramon Berenguer.

Much of its «medieval» look dates from the early 20th century: buildings moved stone by stone and façades redone for the 1929 International Exhibition.

Plaça del Rei holds the civic Gothic ensemble: the Saló del Tinell, the chapel of Santa Àgata and the Palau Reial Major.
