What to do in Horta-Guinardó

Horta-Guinardó is the city going uphill: hillside neighbourhoods with viewpoints and few outsiders. Inside it are the Laberint d'Horta, the oldest surviving garden in Barcelona — neoclassical, from 1794 — and the Carmel bunkers, Civil War anti-aircraft batteries that are now the best-known lookout in the city. If you have a few hours, you go up, look at the whole city, and come back down.

From the village of Horta to the Carmel bunkers, in three steps.

Horta was a town until 1904 and still has a village square, with low houses and preserved farmhouses around it.

The Laberint d'Horta is the oldest surviving garden in Barcelona: neoclassical, from 1794, with a cypress maze at its centre.

The Carmel «bunkers» are the Civil War anti-aircraft batteries on Turó de la Rovira, today the city's best-known lookout.
