What to do in Eixample

The Eixample is a nineteenth-century idea that still works: Cerdà's grid, with twenty-metre chamfered corners that are not an aesthetic whim but room for trams to turn and light to get in. It holds the modernisme of a few blocks in the Dreta and the densest concentration of theatres, cinemas and music venues in the city. If you have a few hours, this is where most things happen at once.

Get to know Eixample

From Cerdà's plan to modernisme, in three steps.

Ildefons Cerdà's 1859 plan called for blocks built on only two sides with a garden in the middle; speculation ended up closing all four.

The twenty-metre chamfered corner is not a styling choice: Cerdà designed it so trams could turn and corners got daylight.

The industrial bourgeoisie built their houses here between 1888 and 1910, which is why Modernisme clusters in a few blocks of the Dreta.
