What to do in Sagrada Família
Almost everyone comes for the basilica, and the basilica earns it: it has been under construction since 1882 and is paid for by the tickets of the people who visit it. But one block away the neighbourhood is ordinary Eixample, with its market, its street shops and civic centres running their own programme. If you have a few hours, the interesting move is to cross that block.
Sagrada Família is a neighbourhood in the Eixample district.

Get to know Sagrada Família
From the basilica to the neighbourhood around it, in three steps.
The basilica was begun in 1882 and is still unfinished: it is funded by visitor tickets, not public money.
Gaudí took charge in 1883, aged 31, and spent the last twelve years of his life on nothing else; when he died in 1926 less than a quarter was built.
One block from the basilica the area is ordinary Eixample: a market, street shops and civic centres with their own programme.
